E aí, pessoal?! Today we will study The 4 Porquês in Portuguese. This can be indeed a little confusing, as these 4 forms are pronounced the same way, but they are written differently because they have different meanings and functions in the language. So let’s learn this now?! Bora lá!
POR QUE = WHY
(Preposição + Pronome interrogativo)
We use por que to ask questions.
Examples:
Por que você fez isso?
Eu não sei por que ele foi embora.
POR QUÊ = WHY
(Preposição + Pronome interrogativo tônico)
We use por quê in the end of a question (followed by a punctuation mark).
Examples:
Você fez isso por quê?
Ele foi embora eu não sei por quê.
PORQUE = BECAUSE
(Conjunção)
We use porque to answer questions.
Examples:
Porque eu estava brava com ele.
Ele foi embora porque estava se sentindo mal.
PORQUÊ = REASON
(Substantivo masculino)
We use Porquê when it means “(O) motivo”, “(A) razão”.
Examples:
Eu gostaria de saber o porquê da sua partida.
Eu não tenho um porquê pra isso.
Ela me deu dois porquês da sua partida.
Other examples:
- Because she was sad. >>>>>> Porque ela estava triste.
- Did they say this? Why? >>>>>> Eles disseram isso? Por quê?
- She fired him, but the reason I don’t know. >>>>>> Ela demitiu ele, mas o porquê eu não sei.
- Why are you laughing? >>>>>> Por que você está rindo?
- Because you’re funny! >>>>>> Porque você é engraçado(a)!
