When we want to say something in a language we are learning, we often look for the direct translation. It works sometimes, but sometimes it doesn’t. That’s what happens when we use negative expressions, because they behave differently across languages. In order to help you use these expressions correctly, making sense in Portuguese, today we are going to learn how to use Negative Expressions in Portuguese!
So let’s check some of them in sentences and learn how they behave in the language.
Negative expressions
Não (No)
- Tem alguma carne que você não come?
- Eu não como carne de porco.
- Você come carne de porco?
- Eu não como carne de porco, não. *
Nada (Nothing)
- Você tá enxergando?
- Eu não tô vendo nada. *
- O que ele bebeu?
- Ele não bebeu nada, não! *
Ninguém (Nobody)
- Ela vai chamar alguém do trabalho pro chá de panela?
- Ela não vai chamar ninguém. *
- Você viu alguém chegar?
- Eu não vi ninguém, não! *
Nenhum (None)
- Você viu algum carro nessa rua?
- Eu não vi nenhum carro. *
- Você tem alguma bolsa grande pra me emprestar?
- Eu não tenho nenhuma bolsa grande, não! *
* Double/triple negatives
We use double negatives in Portuguese to emphasise what we want to deny. We know it is not common in English, but it is very natural to use double negatives in Portuguese. Don’t be afraid of doing it!
Oppositions
- NÃO X SIM (No X Yes)
- NADA X TUDO (Nothing X Everything)
- NINGUÉM X ALGUÉM (Nobody X Somebody)
- NENHUM / NENHUMA X ALGUM / ALGUMA (None X Some)
