False Cognates in Brazilian Portuguese

In this article, we will show you some words that seem to mean something in English, but they actually have a different meaning in Brazilian Portuguese. We call them false cognates. It’s important to recognize them to not say something completely different from what you really meant! Vamos lá?!

False friends

We will show you the word in Portuguese followed by its false friend – the false cognate. We will also give you the real meaning in English and some examples to help you visualizing the word learnt.

ATUALMENTE does not mean ACTUALLY. It means CURRENTLY.

>> Atualmente, eu estou estudando português.

ALIÁS does not mean ALIAS. It means BY THE WAY.

>> Eu não como camarão. Aliás, não como frutos do mar.

BIFE does not mean BEEF. It means STEAK.

>> Eu vou comer um bife.

COLÉGIO does not mean COLLEGE. It means SCHOOL.

>> Esse menino vai ao colégio a pé.

IDIOMA does not IDIOM. It means LANGUAGE.

>> Eu quero aprender este idioma!

JORNAL does not mean JOURNAL. It means NEWSPAPER.

>> Eu adoro ler jornal.

LEGENDA does not mean LEGEND. It means SUBTITLE.

>> Eu prefiro assistir com legenda.

LANCHE does not mean LUNCH. It means SNACK.

>> Eu vou fazer um lanche agora.

NOVELA does not mean NOVEL. It means SOAP OPERA.

PARTICULAR does not mean PARTICULAR. It means PRIVATE.

>> Eu quero ter uma conversa em particular com você.

PARENTE does not mean PARENT. It means RELATIVE.

>> Eu tenho parentes em BH.

PRETENDE does not mean PRETEND. It means INTEND.

>> Ele pretende ser professor de português.

PUXE does not mean PUSH. It means PULL.

>> Puxe a porta para abri-la.
