Olá, let’s learn here some important vocabulary about cleaning! I’m sure you’re gonna use it at some point in your daily routine, especially if you are living in Brazil. You will learn some verbs, together with some example sentences, and some vocabulary of cleaning accessories and cleaning products. Practice, play the audio and make your own sentences in the comment section right below this post!

Let’s do it!

Cleaning Vocabulary:

1. Verbs:

lavar → wash

Ex: Eu lavo o banheiro uma vez por semana. (I wash the bathroom once a week.)

passar pano → mop the floor

Ex: Eu gosto de passar pano no chão da casa todos os dias. (I like to mop the floor of the house every day).

tirar poeira → to take the dust off; to wipe; to dust

Ex: A faxineira não tira poeira dos móveis. (The cleaning lady doesn’t dust the furniture.)

varrer → sweep

Ex: Detesto varrer o chão. (I hate to sweep the floor.)

torcer o pano → twist the fabric

Ex: Você precisa torcer o pano. (You have to twist the fabric). 

encerar o chão → to wax the floor

Ex: Algumas pessoas enceram o chão. (Some people wax the floor.)

esfregar → to mop

Ex: Por favor, esfregue o chão. (Please, mop the floor.)

escovar → to brush

Ex: Ela escova o tapete quando lava. (She brushes the carpet when she washes it.)

passar aspirador de pó → to vacuum

Ex: Hoje vou só passar o aspirador de pó no chão. (Today I’m just going to vacuum the floor).

2. Cleaning tools:

balde → bucket

rodo → squeegee

vassoura → broom

pano de chão → floor cloth

pano de limpeza → cleaning cloth

bucha → sponge

esponja → sponge

palha de aço → steel wool

esfregão → mop

aspirador de pó → vacuum cleaner

escova →  brush

desentupidor → plunger 

3. Cleaning Products:

alvejante → bleach 

sabão em pó → washing powder

desinfetante → disinfectant

multiuso → multipurpose 

cloro → chlorine 

água sanitária → bleach 

sabão em barra → bar soap

detergente → detergent

álcool → alcohol

limpa-vidros → wiper

sapólio →  sapolio

lustra-móveis → furniture polish

cera → floor wax

desengordurante → degreaser

amaciante → fabric softener
