Expressions with verb DAR | Brazilian Portuguese

If you have been studying Portuguese for a while, you probably know the verb DAR. If it’s new for you, it can be translated in English to the verb “give”. But DAR is actually a very productive verb, which means that it can display many different meanings and uses.
So this is our topic today: to learn some Expressions with the verb DAR.

So let’s start right now!

1. Possibility

• Dá pra dormir na viagem? (Is it possible sleep on the trip?)
• Dá pra ficar quieto? (Can you be quiet?)
• Não dá pra ficar tranquilo… (It’s impossible to be calm…)

• Deu pra descansar? (Could you rest?)
• Não deu pra almoçar hoje. (I couldn’t have lunch today.)

• Vai dar pra sair hoje à noite? (Will you be able to go out tonight?)
• Não vai dar pra conversar agora. (I won’t be able to chat right now).

2. To work or not

• Fica tranquilo, vai dar tudo certo! (Stay calm, everything will be fine!)
• Não sei o que aconteceu, as coisas deram errado… (I don’t know what happened, things didn’t work out).
• Não dá certo mexer no celular dos outros… (It doesn’t work to use other people’s cellphone.)

3. Break up

• Ela deu um pé na bunda dele! (She broke up with him!)
• Não vai dar um pé na bunda dela, hein!? (Don’t break up with her, okay!?)
